Two of Melrose's largest fall events fall on Saturday, November 14. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the 10th Annual Melrose Open Studio Tour opens artist studios around the city. At 6 p.m., the doors open at Memorial Hall, 590 Main St., for Harvest, The Food Drive's fundraiser built around tasting stations from local restaurants. The weeks before that Saturday follow a clear order. The calendar moves off the street, takes over the hall, and then spreads out again across the city.
The last week of October is the last week outdoors
The outdoor season closes over three days at the end of October. On Thursday, October 29, the Melrose Farmers' Market holds its final outdoor Thursday of the regular season with a Halloween market and "Fill the Farm Basket." The next afternoon, the Melrose Chamber's Trick or Treat at Melrose Businesses runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Main Street closes to cars between Upham and Grove streets, and participating businesses hand out candy to young children. If you've been working from older Chamber pages, note that this year's date is Friday, October 30, not October 31.
The indoor programs are already filling the same week:
| Date | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 24 | Community-helper story time | Melrose Public Library |
| Tue., Oct. 27 | 1950s Sock Hop Dinner Dance, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Milano Center, 201 West Foster St. |
| Wed., Oct. 28 | Fall-themed adult crafting | Melrose Public Library |
| Thu., Oct. 29 | Teen spooky-graveyard escape room | Melrose Public Library |
| Thu., Oct. 29 | Halloween market and Fill the Farm Basket | Farmers' Market, final outdoor Thursday |
| Fri., Oct. 30 | Trick or Treat at Melrose Businesses, 3:30 to 5 p.m. | Main Street, Upham to Grove |
The Milano Center's Sock Hop comes with a DJ and dinner, according to Melrose Town Guide. The library's October programs run right up to Halloween, and its November calendar continues from there.
Main Street's food lineup changed before the weather did
The trick-or-treat route runs past a different downtown than it did a year ago. Comella's closed its Melrose location permanently in March after more than a decade. Patch reported that company leadership pointed to operational and financial challenges specific to that location. A sign for a new tenant went up at 478 Main St. in July. On Saturday, September 19, Slurp Noodle held its soft opening there, serving ramen, pho and rice bowls.
Demand showed up quickly. On Monday, September 28, Slurp Noodle announced it had sold out of food and would close for the day to restock. It reopened Tuesday. According to Patch's opening report, the restaurant offers dine-in and takeout and was open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. when the story ran. Patch also reported that the owner runs other restaurants with her partner in Somerville and Maynard.
A few blocks off Main Street, Shawbak Lebanese Kitchen & Bakery opened in July at 36–40 West Wyoming Ave. Wicked Local's July openings roundup describes a menu built around Lebanese pastries, breakfast, shawarma and falafel.
These openings tie directly to November 14, when Melrose's kitchens are part of the evening program at Memorial Hall.
November 7 hands the season to Memorial Hall
The Melrose Symphony Orchestra opens its 109th season on Saturday, November 7, at 8 p.m. at Memorial Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m., and a pre-concert talk starts at 7:15. The program is Vignieri's "An American Hymn," Schumann's Symphony No. 4 and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, with Charles Dimmick as violin soloist. Individual tickets are $32 for general admission and $15 for students, and season subscriptions are also available.
The concert is the visible part of a full month at the hall. The City of Melrose's Memorial Hall calendar for November shows how busy 590 Main St. will be:
- MSO rehearsals on November 2, 16, 23 and 30, plus a dress rehearsal on November 6
- All-day MYB rehearsals every Sunday of the month
- Melrose Rotary meetings at midday on November 5, 12 and 19 in the GAR Room
- A Veterans' Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on November 11, also in the GAR Room
- A Friends of Memorial Legacy Reception at 7 p.m. on November 12
- A Melrose Veterans Mobile Food Mart at 10 a.m. on November 18
On that same calendar, Saturday, November 14, belongs to Harvest.
November 14, from morning to night
The Chamber's listing gives Melrose Memorial Hall as the Open Studio Tour's venue, the same building the city has booked for Harvest that day. The organizer, Melrose Arts, describes the tour as a self-guided route through artist studios and exhibition spaces around the city and does not mention a role for the hall, so it's worth checking the organizer's page before you plan your route. The map currently posted on the organizer's site is the 2025 version, and the full 2026 artist list has not been published. One confirmed 2026 participant is artist Lorrie DiCesare, whose own site lists a Willow Street studio for the tour.
Here is how the day lines up:
- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Open Studio Tour runs across the city on both Saturday and Sunday.
- During the day. The library holds a family drop-in creativity session.
- 6 p.m. Doors open at Memorial Hall for Harvest, according to the city's facility calendar.
Harvest is run by The Food Drive, and proceeds support its work feeding neighbors. Tickets are $85. The event includes eight tasting stations from local restaurants, a dessert station from local bakeries, live music, a cash bar and raffles. The ticket page does not give a start time, so the 6 p.m. doors time comes only from the city's booking.
The tour continues Sunday, November 15, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. That Sunday is also the target grand-opening date for Dynamic Evolutions, a Norwood medical spa opening a second location at 35 Green St. Founder Christina Knight gave Melrose Town Guide the November 15 date, and she will be joined at the Melrose location by Dr. Edgar Ballenas and medical aesthetician Marian Negron. The date is a target, not a confirmed opening.
After the fourteenth, the calendar spreads out again
The Farmers' Market returns once more on November 22 with a Harvest Market at Bowden Park. On November 24, the library's "Tasty Books for Hungry Readers" group meets. The hall's calendar marks November 26 as the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
Mount Hood Golf Course is also preparing for colder weather. It is promoting fall rounds and offering its three indoor TrackMan simulators at 100 Slayton Road through the winter, according to a September 29 Melrose Town Guide update. With the simulators running through winter, Mount Hood carries on after the outdoor market and the November events at the hall have wrapped up.
Open Studio weekend lets the city walk through rooms that artists have set up to be seen, and our design studio approaches a home with the same goal of making each room show at its best. If you're planning how your Melrose home will look as the season moves indoors, Covelle & Company can help with lighting, layout and finishes so every room is ready to be seen.
