Meg, tell us how you got started in photography?
Where to begin?! I've always loved photos, starting my parents' extensive photo albums, so I always had a camera in my hands. I went to film school in Los Angeles and I started photographing the city around me, as well as our student film sets. When I moved back to Boston, I actually got a paying job at a photo studio, mostly photographing young children. I started cultivating my own business and I've been working on my own ever since (17 years!).
You’ve also started helping people with their family photos. Can you elaborate on that aspect of your work?
Yes, I've started helping people deal with the overwhelm of *their* family photos, which I love. It combines my love of photography with my love of family history and I help make it easier for people to access and share their photos. What good is having all of those old photos if you can't actually enjoy them?!
How do you perceive the landscape of photography, particularly regarding the role of women in the industry?
What was once a male-dominated field is now full of talented women. I'm lucky enough to be part of a community (two, if you count the photo organizers community) that values helping each other over competition. We are each other's best resources and best referral source. When you don't have coworkers, being able to use other small business owners as sounding boards is amazing. You never feel like you're in it alone. The people who are supposed to be my competition have become some of my very best friends.
